2017-2018 Volunteers

My name is Willa Van Camp and I am a 22 year old from Palo Alto, CA. I graduated from Austin College with a major in Economics and a minor in Spanish this past May 2017. I love music and play violin, viola, handbells, and sing in choir when there is one available. I also love to read and often reread Jane Austen who is one of my favorite authors. When I have the opportunity one of my favorite things is to hike and enjoy nature. The social justice issue that I am most passionate about is the issue of child soldiers and children’s issues more broadly ranging from access to healthcare to quality education. I think that we have a responsibility to leave this world better than we found it and a major component to that is protecting and preparing children because they are the future. What I am most looking forward to in my YAV year is learning and growing. I am most looking forward to all of the things I don’t know about yet that will help me grow and learn and further develop into the person I hope to be.
My name is Parks Smithey and I am 24 years old was raised in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. After high school I attended Belmont Abbey College for two years. I transferred out west to California State University San Bernardino where I played baseball for two years; then I transferred to Guilford College and majored in Sport management and minored in Business. I graduated from Guilford College in May 2017. Some of my favorite hobbies would be Netflix, reading, working out, cleaning, and a little bit of cooking. I am most passionate about homelessness. I have been on several mission trips throughout my youth and homelessness is the issue that I commonly see. It is as if homelessness has been accepted in our society. I am not OK with that. I am looking forward to meeting new people who share the common passions that I do. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together!
My name is Lauren Rye. I am 23 years old and grew up in Rochester, NY. I studied music education at Nazareth College and following graduation I got a job teaching chorus and general music for students in grades K-12. After one wonderful year of teaching, I have decided to become a YAV! I think I’m most passionate and informed on issues surrounding access to equal education within the United States. I’m also really interested in issues surrounding wrongful convictions, how those are overturned and what the process is for those who are re-adjusting to life outside of prison after being wrongfully convicted. I don’t know much about this issue and so I’m hoping to take the time this year to learn some more. This year I’m looking forward to learning about some of these different social justice issues and how I can better walk alongside those facing injustices.

My name is Cammie Coulter, I am 22 years old and I am from Birmingham Alabama. I attended Auburn University and Studied Human Development and Family studies as well as philanthropy and nonprofit. Some of my favorite things to do are get coffee with friends, hike, read, camp, and watch Auburn football! The social justice issue I am most passionate about is educational equity. I believe that education is a right not a privilege and that zip code, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, sexuality, etcetera should not have an affect on the quality of education a child receives. I am most looking forward to walking beside, living into, loving on, and doing life with the Asheville community and my roommates this year. I cant wait to see the ways we grow over the course of this year!
